Tracking Down Our Ancestors: James Crawford
Per the entry for William Crawford in the Botetourt Cty, VA heritage book, we learn that James and William were brothers: William's son Robert K Crawford "married his cousin Elizabeth Crawford (born 1 Nov 1802), daughter of James Crawford and Jane McClellan."
William's father is identified as John Crawford from an entry about William in the same source: "Though his mother is unknown, we do know that his father was John Crawford. This was learned through a study of Botetourt County deeds, with one deed stating his father, John Crawford, was the original owner of the land examined." Thus James' father was also John Crawford.
It appears that James and Jean had 3 additional children per the 1830 census for Boone Cty, MO: 1 male under 5, 1 male 10-14 (John M), 1 female under 5, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 15-19 (Nancy). They have not been identified yet.
James and Jane and their children moved to Boone Cty, MO before 1825 per their grandson James Wilkerson Allison's biographical sketch published in Portrait and biographical record of Marion, Ralls and Pike counties, Missouri, pages 576-577: "While still a mere lad (Alexander) removed with his parents to Boone County, Mo., where he met Jemima Crawford, a native of Virginia, and their marriage soon afterward took place."
Per their grandson (James' brother) John Benjamin Allison's biographical sketch published in "History of Boone County, Missouri. Written and comp. from the most authentic official and private sources; including a history of its townships, towns, and villages:" "[h]is mother was the daughter of James Crawford, one of the first settlers of Boone county." Boone Cty was created from a portion of Howard Cty in Nov 1820, which appears to confirm that James Crawford and his family moved to Boone Cty in the early 1820s, prior to his daughter Jemima’s marriage to Alexander Allison on 15 Sep 1825.
James' and Jane's daughter Elizabeth and her husband (their nephew) Robert K Crawford, and their son William and his wife Louisa Lane lived on neighboring acreage per land grants recorded by the Bureau of Land Management. Their daughter Jemima and her husband Alexander Allison lived nearby in neighboring Monroe Cty. Their son Wilkinson and his wife Nancy Simms lived in Saverton Twp, Ralls Cty. Their daughter Nancy's widower Henry Simms sold 40 acres of land to his brother-in-law Alexander Allison in 1838 (land presumed to be in Ralls County).
While James' and Jane's grave sites have not been located, nor do we know their exact dates of death, it's most likely that they died where they lived, on a farm in Saline Township, Ralls Cty, MO, presuming that they lived on the land that was awarded to James, posthumously, via land patent issued on 2 April 1832, recorded 24 April 1833. He was identified in the land patent as "James Crawford of Boone County."
