Verbatim copy of letter written by Benjamin while he was serving in the Unites States army during the way of 1812. Unfortunately, the letter was missing the date he wrote the letter and his location.
Some few days being elapsed, this is the 27th of the month, some few things occur to mind, which I will disclose to you, to wit, Major Wells from Henry is at this time under arrest. The charge against him is this, intoxication and ungentlemanly conduct to the sentinels and guard when going the grand rounds. It is the opinion of many, together with myself, that he will come out with honour.
My daily residence is with Captain Jones, Lieut. Cooper, Lieut. Cabaness and Lieut. Ferguson, all from Franklin, for whom I act as Clerk. John Lovell lives in the same house and is well and hearty, though the men at this place are as well as can be expected, considering the great number of people which are slated here.
You will not fail to write to me and give me a general description of all that is good. I want to hear nothing that is bad, it would add much to the mortification of my spirits.
Give my best respects to all your good neighbors and inquiring friends. Respectfully remember me to your Father and family; likewise to William Barton if you should see him. Farewell.
This from your best friend and companion.
Benjamin Woodson
