Benjamin Franklin Sanford, son of Nathan and Bethia Barker Sanford, was
born March 22, 1840, near Ithica, New York, and died at his home in
Eureka, November 5, 1928.
In 1845 his father's family moved to
Illinois settling at Fairview, Fulton County, later moving to a farm in
the western part of the same county where he grew to manhood.
In
1864, March 31, he was united in marriage to Sarah Esher MacLeran to
whom five children were born, Jessie, the second child passed away in
early childhood and May, the fifth child, in early womanhood, at the age
of 16 years.
The surviving members of the family are the widow,
one son and two daughters, George L., of Chicago, Illinois; Mrs.
Alphones Deltenre (Josie M.) and Miss Grace C. Sanford. The two latter
reside in Eureka.
The greater part of his life work was farming
and other similar activities. for fifteen years he was custodian of the
Eureka city park, resigning that position eight years ago at the age of
80 years.
The past few years were marked by a gradual decline
until the peaceful end the evening of November 5th. He is mourned by
the family as a loving husband and father, also by a brother, Leroy B.
of Minneapolis, Minn., the youngest of ten children. Having a gental
kind and neighborly disposition he will greatly missed by host of
friends who knew and respected him furing his long residence of 41 years
in Greenwood and 30 years in Eureka.
Funeral service, conducted
by Rev. John H. Jones, was held at the family home on South Oak Street,
Thursday, November 8, 1928. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
