Arthur Allison Gray/Arthur Adelbert Allison
About that name change
Per the Historical Genealogy of the Woodsons and Their Connections, we
know his birth date and birth place, and that he married on "December 2,
1907 to Lillie Mae Clarke of Los Angeles, California, in which city
they now reside."
A search for Arthur Allison Gray and Lillie Mae Clarke turned up records
for Arthur Adelbert Allison and Lillie May Clark in Los Angeles. On
their son Bert's birth certificate, his parents are identified as Arthur
Allison and Lillie Clark. Arthur's birthplace is listed as Missouri.
His occupation is "Tool dresser," which isn't exactly in the plumbing
field, as per the Woodson genealogy, but it's not too far a stretch
either.
Arthur identifies himself as Arthur Albert Allison on his WWI draft
registration. His date of birth matches up to that of Arthur Allison
Gray. Occupation is "oil well driller." His nearest relative is Mrs.
Lillie May Allison, in Glenrock, Wyoming.
The next record is the 1920 US Census for Rockdale, Carbon, Wyoming.
Arthur Allison is listed as head of household, which included wife Lilly
May and Birdie [sic] J. Arthur's estimated birth year is 1885, place of
birth is Missouri. His father's place of birth is listed as Iowa; his
mother's place of birth is listed as Missouri. That matches up to John
Adelbert Gray's and Arabella Jane Allison's places of birth.
On the border crossing paperwork he filled out when he and his family
crossed into Canada so he could work in the Edmonton-Alberta oil fields,
he stated that his place of birth was Missouri City, Missouri.
He lists Missouri, Iowa and Missouri as places of birth for himself, his
father and his mother, respectively, on the 1930 Census. His estimated
birth year is 1885.
He identified himself as Arthur Adelbert Allison on his WWII draft
registration and stated that he was born July 18, 1885 in Missouri City,
Missouri.
The final confirmation is the paperwork, filled out by Lillie, provided
by the Reis Family Mortuary, that handled his and Lillie's funerals. His
birth date is given as 18 Jul 1885, birth state is reported as
Missouri. These 2 details have been consistent on all paperwork for
Arthur Adelbert Allison and match what we know about Arthur Allison
Gray. Lilly reported that Arthur's parents were John Allison and Belle
Gray; the correct surnames, just switched, an understandable error given
that she only knew him as Arthur Allison.
If these two Arthur's are actually separate individuals, it would be a heckuva coincidence, one that defies the odds.
