Herman Edward Gottlieb Nohr, biographical sketch

Herman Edward Gottlieb Norh was born in Cammin, Pommern (Pomerania), Prussia, an area that is now part part of Poland. Cammin, Pomerania is now known as Kamień Pomorski, Gmina Kamień Pomorski, Kamień, West Pomeranian, Poland.

He and his siblings, August and Wilhelm Friedrich with their parents Michael Frederick and Christine (Ramthun) Nohr, left their home in Cammin, boarded the Stephani in Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New York harbor on 10 August 1841. The family initially settled in Jackson, Washington County, Wisconsin. He purchased 40 acres in Jackson Township on 2 August 1852, and met and married his first wife, Sophia Wilhelmina Nimz on 14 January 1855. It appears she died because he married his 2nd wife, Henrietta Natzke, on 20 April 1856, also in Jackson, Washington County, Wisconsin. Their daughter Rosalina was born in Jackson Township before the family moved to Morrison Township, Brown County, most likely about 1859 when his father, and his brothers and their families moved to Morrison. The rest of their children were born here before Henrietta died about 1878.

He married his 3rd wife, Maria Stunnir on 26 May 1878 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. After Maria died in 1892, he married his 4th and last wife, Wilhelmina (Bose/Boose) Beyrow on 17 November 1896. Their married life was apparently brief because the 1900 Census finds her living in Milwaukee with her son from her first marriage and him living in North Dakota with two of his sons and a daughter-in-law. He returned to Shawano County, Wisconsin by 1910. He died 1914, presumably at home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael Frederick and Christine (Ramthum) Nohr, and his brothers August and Wilhelm.

He fought in the Civil war, serving as a private in Wisconsin's 13th Infantry, Company E, mustering in on 28 December 1864 and mustering out on 19 July 1865.
