Wilhelm Friedrich Nohr was born in Cammin, Pommern (Pomerania), Prussia, an area that is now
part part of Poland. Cammin, Pomerania, is now known as Kamień Pomorski, Gmina Kamień Pomorski, Kamień, West Pomeranian, Poland
He and his siblings, Herman and August with their
parents Michael Frederick and Christine (Ramthun) Nohr, left their home
in Cammin, boarded the Stephani in Hamburg, Germany and arrived in New
York harbor on 10 August 1841. The family initially settled in Jackson
Township, Washington County, Wisconsin, where Wilhelm met and married
his wife Scharlotte Schneider. Their children Fred W, Augusta, and Frank
were born here. Wilhelm purchased 40 acres in Jackson Township on 1 May
1855.
Wilhelm sold his land and moved his family to Morrison
Township, Brown County, Wisconsin, most likely moving with his father
Michael, and his brothers, August, Herman and their families about 1859.
Wilhelm and Scharlotte's children Mark Johann Heinrich, Eliza, Philip,
Wilhelm Herman, Emma, and Caroline were born here. Wilhelm signed up for
the Union Army draft but does not appear to have served during the
Civil War.
Land records show that August owned 81.93 acres in Morrison Township by 1889.
It
is presumed that he died at home. He was survived by his wife,
Scharlotte, and children, Fred, Augusta, Frank, Eliza, Philip, Wilhelm
Herman, Emma, and Caroline, and his brothers August and Herman. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Michael Frederick and Christina
(Ramthun) Nohr, and his son Mark Johann Heinrich.
Note: his birth
date per his headstone inscription does not agree with his birth date
as provided by Pomerania, Germany, Parish Register Transcripts for
Cammin, Pommern, where he and his brothers were born. The baptism record
is deemed correct since it's an original source; the headstone
inscription is considered a secondary source for his date of birth. His
date of death per his headstone also does not agree with State of
Wisconsin records.
