Whitney Clark Huntington, obituary

Whitney Clark Huntington, was born on September 29, 1887 at Denver, Colorado. He received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1910. In 1912 he was awarded the professional degree of Civil Engineer and in 1913 the Master of Science. His abilities gained for him early recognition and in 1919, only 8 years after graduation, he became professor and Head of Civil Engineering at Colorado. For 30 years, from 1926 when he came to the University of Illinois until 1956 when he retired, he served this university with distinction as head of it's civil engineering department.

Early in his position at the University of Colorado, Professor Huntington became a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. This prestigious organization elevated him to the grade of Honorary Member in 1957, this highly coveted award recognized him not only for his technical achievements but for his extraordinary success in advancing civil engineering education. In 1947 the University of Colorado conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Science and in 1958 his native city, Denver, bestowed upon him the Centennial Award of Distinguished Citizen. Professor Huntington was the predominant influence in placing the Civil Engineering Department at Illinois in a position of national leadership in engineering education.

He died on March 31, 1965, at Urbana, Illinois.
